Why hedgehogs? It is a story that begins with our love and fascination for exotic animals. Growing up in the heart of Brazil, my father worked as the wildlife Chief of Police in our hometown.

As a child, when my father would rescue animals and bring them back to the sanctuary. He would sneak me in and let me help handle and feed some of the most amazing animals you could ever meet. This includes a long list of monkeys, endangered parrots, jaguars, ocelots, crocodiles, turtles, etc.

My favorite memory was interacting with a few hedgehogs that he had confiscated. The hedgehogs were illegally imported into the country. I rememember the hedgehogs curling themselves into little balls of spikes and thinking how cool is this!

When I grew up, I moved to the United States where of course hedgehogs are legal! I immediately found a great breeder and purchased my very own hedgehog. I became obsessed with all things hedgehog.

My husband Jay was the owner of Granite State Hedgehogs in Franklin, New Hampshire and with him also having a love for hedgehogs it made us a match in heaven.

We both ran the Granite State Hedgehogs breeding program for a few years before adding in our long-time friend Sam to help. Sam now runs the day-to-day operations at our shop in Franklin, New Hampshire, while Jay and I now live in Greenville, South Carolina establishing another excellent breeding program to serve hedgehog lovers in South Carolina and North Carolina.

All of our hedgehogs are pedigreed and come from far-reaching bloodlines. They're raised with passion and are handled with love. We hope that you'll come to love our hedgehogs as much as we do.

What is a hedgehog?

Hedgehogs are adorable little animals. Their backs have prickly spines, and their bellies are soft and furry. When threatened or scared, they roll into a tight ball, and their spines lay almost flat when relaxed. They make a great beginner exotic pet as they are easy to care for and just plain fun. Despite their impressive display of small spines, they can be pretty friendly, and when they feel secure, their little quills feel like a hairbrush.

Hedgehogs love to explore and run around. They love critter balls, which can be a great tool to keep them in shape. Our baby hedgehogs start weaning from mom at about five weeks of age and are then handled daily and socialized when ready for their new homes at 6-8 weeks old.

What exactly is a hedgehog? No, they are not porcupines, and while they look similar, they are not related at all. African pygmy hedgehogs are insectivore opportunist mammals, not rodents like porcupines. A hedgehog's closest relative is a shrew.

An average African Pygmy Hedgehog will fit in an adult man's cupped hand weighing between 1/2lb to 2lbs in weight. African Pygmy hedgehogs have a thick coat of spines varying in color. There is no fur under the spines, but soft white or dark hair covers the belly, neck, face, and legs. Their sight is relatively poor, but hearing, smell, and taste are great.

Well-adjusted hedgehogs go to strangers with ease. They can make good "first" pets for kids with adult supervision. If you are going on vacation for a week, they usually won't be depressed or angry. They will willingly go to you when you come back as if you never left. You can purchase all of the needed supplies right on our website.

Hedgehog Basics

Lifespan: Up to 3 - 8 years

Diet: Our babies are sent home on Fromm - Gold Adult Cat food. We've chosen Fromm for its commitment to quality nutritional value. It is a complete diet, and there is no need for supplements. We free-feed our hedgehogs, offering them 1/4 of a cup of food per day. Available through our site and at pickup.

Size at Adulthood: Healthy hedgehogs can range in weight from 1/2 lb to 2lbs, about the size of a softball. In comparison, they are bigger than a rat and smaller than a guinea pig.

Captive Environments: Hedgehogs do best in a cage that is draft-free but allows airflow, is easy to clean, and escape-proof. We use guinea pig-style wire cages with plastic bottoms.

How To Care For A Hedgehog

Habitat: There are many options to choose from when choosing a habitat. We use and recommend guinea-pig-style habitat wire cages with plastic bottoms. All of our babies are gravity-fed water bottle trained. They'll also need a food dish. For bedding, we recommend using recycled paper beddings such as CareFresh or Clean & Cozy. Recycled paper tends to be the safest option since they are processed and does not pose the same risks as natural wood-based beddings. They will need a hideout, an appropriate flat-bottomed running wheel, toys, and a proper heat setup. We sell complete hedgehog cage setups, which can be picked up at delivery or delivered with your baby.

Your hedgehog's bedding needs to be changed at least every 5-7 days. When washing their cage, avoid any harsh chemicals. We use Dawn dish liquid to clean our cages. Hedgehogs require baths about 1-2 times per month using warm water, baby shampoo, and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Inspect your hedgehog's toenails and trim as needed (usually 1-2 times per month). You can cut their nails with cat nail trimmers.

Hedgehogs like to walk around and need exercise. We use 12-inch flat-bottomed running wheels, which work great in helping them keep up with their routine.

Inspect your hedgehogs for toenail trimmings. You can clip long nails with baby nail clippers.

Hedgehogs gain enrichment inspecting surroundings, exploring, and finding new smells & objects.

Hedgehogs love exploring, and they always seem like they are on a mission to explore and have fun in their playpen.

Your hedgehog would enjoy several hours of play each evening in their pen. Hedgehogs are solitary and must be separated once they reach maturity. However, if two females are raised together, they will often live together fine with little to no aggression as adults.

Diet: Hedgehogs are omnivorous insectivores and require an appropriate diet of high-quality cat kibble. You can supplement with dead or live insects and small amounts of fruits and vegetables. Feeding hedgehogs too much fruit can cause loose stool, and hedgehogs do not seem to like many vegetables.

Handling: Hedgehogs are solitary and require daily handling to build a solid bond. Generally speaking, the more you handle your hedgehogs, the friendlier they will be.

Hedgehogs have poor eyesight. It can be a good idea to place a worn article of clothing inside your hedgehog's cage, and the worn clothing helps them associate your smell as something safe.

African Pygmy hedgehogs are domesticated and are usually awake for part of the day and night. At night, typically when all the lights go off, hedgehogs come alive! Nighttime is when they are best handled.

Actual holding and touching a hedgehog can be challenging at first but will quickly become an easy task to achieve. Yes they have sharp spines, however they are easy to handle and even novice owners will be playing and holding their babies in no time. As your hedgehog gets older, their spines will soften as they grow in their adult coat.
